A trip to see a modeling icon

    in Cool Stuff

Yesterday, Nov 24, a friend of mine had invited me to take a trip with him up to Springfield, Mo. to visit Mr Bob Letterman. Some of you may have heard of him or know of his talents. Bob has been building dioramas since the early 1980's. His eye for detail and his ability to glean the most minute splinter of history lends itself to some of the most outstanding and realistic displays of diorama art I have ever seen. This man has quite the history himself from his early years in the Army to his career as a law enforcement officer and detective with the St Louis PD to running the most successful modeling aftermarket companies, VLS or as we know it Verlinden.

I had the chance to enjoy a few hours in his private museum located in his modest home just north of Springfield. Bob has quite the collection of millitaria from Generals Schwartzkopf and Powell's scarves and head gear to gas masks from the first world war. Law enforcement gear from all over the world and things that one would normally find in national museums. Bob maintains a personal cinema with military and historical films whose numbers would manage to make a person gape in awe,

Bob has the ability to place you in a specific era of history, in a specific place of time and a specific location with his dioramas. Figures and details all come to life in the imagination when you see the colors and textures that records a specific event in history. From his first diorama " Winds of War" to his most current build " Logistics"

Here are just a few of the photos that I took during my visit.

Wow what a great opportunity to be able to spend time with one of the masters of our hobby. His influence on most of us is seen in our methods and completed models. Thanks for posting this and the link that I will have to explore later.
